As usual, the spring semester is off to a busy start at Brenau and I hope everyone has enjoyed a productive first week.
This month, I’m debuting a monthly podcast called Brenau Insight: Conversations with the President on WBCX and via SoundCloud. I appreciate Jay Andrews, director of broadcasting and digital communication at Brenau, hosting the podcast with me.
We have a lot going on at Brenau this month, including two great art exhibitions in our galleries – Melissa Huang and Paul Paiement. Also, Brenau students are featured at the High Museum through the end of January.
Brenau will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, for a federal holiday: Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I look forward to seeing all faculty, staff and students at the Jan. 18 annual spring formal convocation that traditionally honors King’s legacy.
This year, we welcome keynote speaker Jeffrey Blount, an award-winning author and television producer. The event takes place 12:45-1:45 p.m. in Pearce Auditorium and also features student performances. Blount will sign books 2-2:45 p.m. in the Presidents Gallery, followed by a special student discussion 3-4 p.m. in Thurmond-McRae Lecture Hall.
Dr. King expressed his convictions that education exists to teach individuals to think intensively and critically about challenging ideas. His beliefs have much in common with the Brenau Ideal, especially two specific phrases:
“To be prepared for service, thereby earning the right to be served.”
And, one of the most-quoted lines of the Brenau Ideal: “To love deeply, fear nothing, hate never.”
I hope that you have a successful spring semester, as we work together for the betterment of Brenau and our communities.
