This week, our nation celebrates its 250th birthday, a significant milestone and a wonderful reason to celebrate. While I am glad to reward our hard-working employees with a long weekend, I hope many will remember why we mark the holiday. July 4 marks the date when the 13 American colonies declared independence from Great Britain, an act that fundamentally changed our nation and the world.
It is truly an historic time to reflect on what independence means to us today, not just as citizens, but as a community of learners.
When I think about that deeper meaning of freedom, I’m always reminded of the words of Dr. H. J. Pearce, one of Brenau’s earliest presidents.
The “Brenau Ideal” includes the statement: “To enjoy that freedom which comes from knowledge of the truth.”
Pearce believed that freedom isn’t just an abstract concept; it is something only fully experienced through the pursuit of truth. He was convinced that seeking knowledge is the essential prerequisite for truly experiencing the freedom to cooperate and thrive alongside all of humankind.
In honor of this special occasion, Brenau has opened a special exhibition featuring pieces from Brenau’s Norton Family Legacy Art Collection. We have more than 60 artworks on display with distinct Americana themes—everything from large-scale paintings and needlepoint to ceramics. The exhibition will continue throughout the summer at our Leo Castelli Gallery.
