Brenau Galleries featured on first Art Walk

Claudia Wilburn: Navigate by Reckoning. Renaissance Gallery on the Square, 102 Spring Street, Gainesville. April 20-July 21, 2023. Opening Reception: April 20

Brenau University will open several of its galleries to the public as part of the first Downtown Gainesville Art Walk on Thursday, April 20.

Sellars, Leo Castelli and the Gainesville Renaissance galleries will be open for Art Walk participants to enjoy exhibits as they travel throughout Gainesville’s historic district. The event is free and open to the public.

“Gainesville is home to many talented artists, and Brenau is fortunate to share a glimpse of the talented artists and impressive exhibitions we have to offer during Art Walk,” Brenau Galleries Director Gena Robbins said. “I am thrilled to showcase Brenau Art & Design Department Chair Claudia Wilburn in the Gainesville Renaissance Gallery, our student work in Sellars and Presidents galleries, and to close out Judith Suroweic’s exhibit in Castelli Gallery during the tour. We continue to have incredible artists exhibiting at Brenau this summer and into the fall. I hope the community will be inspired to see what’s new after the Art Walk.”

Robbins said Wilburn’s solo exhibition, Navigate by Reckoning, will open during Art Walk. An opening reception will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the gallery. Navigate by Reckoning presents mixed media works detailing family history, personal life experiences, emotional journeys and memorabilia. Wilburn will give an artist talk at 6 p.m. on May 4; the show will close on July 21.

The Brenau Collaborative will wrap up in Sellars and Presidents galleries on April 21, allowing a final look at capstone works by Brenau seniors Juliana Cifuentes, Michaela Cope, Tameria Jeffery, Danny Doyle, Anna Feng, Dennissee Rodriguez and Destiny Clay. The capstone projects will be on display in the Presidents Gallery, while the Annual Student Juried Exhibition will be in Sellars Gallery. Both galleries are in the Simmons Visual Arts Center at Brenau’s historic Gainesville campus.

Judith Suroweic: Moments in Time is on display in the Leo Castelli Gallery in the John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts on the historic campus. Suroweic is a Buford, Georgia, artist who creates colorful Americana scenes on location with acrylic paint and colored pencils. Art Walk will be the last time community members can view Moments in Time before the solo exhibition closes.

Presented by Main Street Gainesville, Art Walk is supported by Brenau, The Arts Council, Celestial Studios, The Gallery on the Square, The Purple House Gallery and The Quinlan. The event runs from 4-8 p.m. and features open house-style meet and greets with artists, refreshments, live music and specials at various businesses in the historic district. The Gainesville Trolley will also make stops in the district during the tour.
