Brenau University classes and events are canceled from Saturday, Jan. 24, through Monday, Jan. 26, at all campuses. The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning for north Georgia and metro Atlanta that is effective from 1 p.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Monday.
An Ice Storm Warning means significant freezing rain is expected, leading to dangerous ice accumulation from 0.25 to 1 inch that makes travel hazardous or impossible, causes widespread power outages from downed lines, and damages trees.
Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency across Georgia, as forecasts from the National Weather Service predict winter precipitation, freezing temperatures, dangerously slick roads, and power outages throughout Gainesville and the metro Atlanta area beginning Saturday.
President David L. Barnett will continue to monitor the situation at Brenau’s campuses in Gainesville, Norcross, and across the region, but the expectation at this time is a return to normal operations on Tuesday unless otherwise notified.
“I encourage the Brenau community to monitor the website and area media outlets for updates,” Barnett said. “Gov. Brian Kemp has issued a state of emergency across Georgia, and I echo his guidance to be safe and stay off the roads.”
Food service will remain open on the Historic Gainesville Campus, and security can be reached via phone at (770) 534-6202 for any residential students who need assistance. Residential students should talk to their RAs about the severe weather plan for their residence hall, including what to do in case of a power loss.
