1. Apply to Brenau

Before you do anything else, make sure you complete your application to Brenau. Once admitted, all undergraduate students who will to take classes on-ground are automatically considered for merit scholarships from Brenau. During the 2024-2025 academic year, 95% of undergraduate students received merit aid.

Merit scholarships are determined based on your GPA, and you don’t need to do anything other than apply to Brenau to qualify!

2. File Your FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines your eligibility for federal financial aid including the Pell Grant, Federal Work Study and loans.*  The FAFSA opens each year on October 1 and you and your parents can file completely online at studentaid.gov.

Filing your FAFSA is the most important way to ensure that you receive as much financial aid as possible, and only takes about 30 minutes to complete. File as soon as you can, because our financial aid office processes files in the order we receive them. That means the sooner your file, the sooner you’ll know your financial aid package. You need to complete the FAFSA every year, so save it on your calendar for Oct. 1!

3. Apply for State Aid

In Georgia there are a variety of sources of financial aid that you and your family should know about as you consider your college options. To apply for all Georgia state financial aid, visit gafutures.org. Once completed, the Georgia aid application is valid for 10 years.

The State of Georgia offers both the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships to students attending in-state universities. To learn about the specific amount of aid provided by each scholarship please visit GAfutures’ Award Amount page and select Brenau from the list of Private Colleges in Georgia

To qualify for the HOPE Scholarship you must: 

  • Have a 3.0 or higher high school GPA in your core courses
  • Graduate from a HOPE eligible high school
  • Meet the Georgia residency requirements

To qualify for the Zell Miller Scholarship you must: 

  • Meet all HOPE Scholarship requirements
  • Have a 3.7 or higher high school GPA in your core courses or be the valedictorian or salutatorian from your high school
  • Have either a 1200 on your math and reaching sections of the SAT or a 26 composite ACT score
    • Test scores must come from a single exam

The Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant (GTEG) funds in-state students attending private universities in Georgia and grants money for up to three semesters per year.

4. Apply for Brenau Aid

Brenau offers a variety of scholarships, grants and awards to undergraduate students. To qualify for Brenau aid, you must be an undergraduate student taking classes on-ground on the Gainesville campus.

The Brenau Promise for HOPE and Pell Recipients ensures that an eligible student’s full tuition and Institutional & Instructional (I&I) development fee are covered after all applicable institutional, state and federal scholarships and grants have been awarded.

To be eligible you must

  • Be a full-time, first time freshman attending classes on-ground
    • This means you’ve never been to college before and you’ll be taking at least 12 credit hours in person. Online students are not eligible for Brenau Promise.
  • Meet the Georgia Residency requirement
  • Receive either the HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship
  • Qualify for the Pell Grant

After you file your FAFSA and complete your Georgia Student Finance Application, you don’t need to do anything else to apply for Brenau Promise. Once your high school releases your official transcript after graduation, and Brenau receives your FAFSA, we’ll review your eligibility for Brenau Promise. Since this applies after all your other scholarships, we’ll let you know over the summer whether you officially qualify or not, but your admissions counselor can help you understand whether you’re likely to receive Brenau Promise as soon as you have your financial aid package.

Brenau offers scholarships for Golden Tiger athletes competing on one of our 15 NAIA teams. Your coach will work directly with our financial aid team to determine your scholarship eligibility and amount.

Students in fine and performing arts programs can receive additional talent scholarships in dance, theatre, music and studio art. These scholarships require an audition or portfolio submission.

The Brenau Presidential Award is the premier competitive scholarship for incoming freshmen, and covers full tuition and the Institutional and Instructional (I&I) development fee along with applicable state grants. Students are selected based on past and potential academic success, leadership achievement and personal qualities as exemplified in the Brenau Ideal.

If you are eligible to apply for this award, you will receive an email with additional instructions.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be a full-time, first time freshman residential student
    • This means you’ve never been to college before and you’ll be taking at least 12 credit house in person and living on campus
  • Have a 3.75 GPA and be willing to participate in the Honors College
  • Write an essay on a provided topic and submit a resume
  • If chosen, complete an interview

5. Receive Your Aid Package & Schedule a Cost Conversation

Once you apply for your financial aid, our team will work as quickly as possible to create your financial aid package. Once complete, you will receive an email notification and a mailed letter and you can view your package in your student portal.

Once you have your package, you should schedule a cost conversation with your admissions counselor. This is the best way to understand everything you need to know to make an informed decision about whether Brenau is right for you.

During your cost conversation you and your counselor will:

  • Go through your costs and financial aid, dollar-by-dollar to make sure you and your family understand exactly what you will owe
  • If you are an in-state student, your counselor will help you understand whether or not you are likely to receive the Brenau Promise for HOPE and Pell Recipients and how this will impact your balance
  • Explain Brenau’s payment plans to you and your family and discuss the benefits of each option
