Before you pack up your life and move to our beautiful historic Gainesville campus, we encourage you to take a look at some of the recommendations provided below. We want you to feel comfortable at Brenau, but bringing everything you own is probably not the best idea, since you’ll be sharing space with a roommate. We also recommend cutting back on the number of electrical appliances you keep in the room. Many of our residence halls are historic, and can’t handle an abundance of electrical systems.

The essentials

  • Extra long twin bedding (sheets, comforter, pillows)
  • Mattress pad
  • Hygiene items (shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hand soap, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrush)
  • Laptop
  • Cleaning products — you are responsible for cleaning your room and bathroom
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Clothes (try to only pack for the current season if able to)
  • One set of plastic dishwear
  • Laundry detergent (pods preferable)
  • Dryer sheets
  • Rolling clothes hamper
  • Shower caddy
  • Travel First Aid kit
  • Travel hygiene supplies to keep in backpack to freshen up between classes
  • Power strip
  • Phone and laptop chargers
  • Plug-in fan
  • Command strips
  • Mini fridge (needs to be 4 cubic feet or under)
  • Microwave (between 600-800 watts)
  • Shower curtain (check with suite mates to make sure everyone doesn’t bring one)
  • Clothes hangers
  • School supplies

Less essential, but still nice to have

  • Wedge pillow
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Your favorite snacks
  • Car fresheners to stick in vents
  • Batter-powered LED lights to decorate your room
  • Mini Keurig
  • Fun room decorations
  • Umbrella
  • Full-length mirror
  • Blankets

Do NOT bring

Most of the items in this list are not allowed for health and safety reasons or because they may damage the university’s property. Items like extra appliances, plug-in string lights, extension cords and candles are fire hazards. We are held to the state and federal laws for fire safety and must comply with the local fire marshal. The remaining items are not allowed because of space, health issues or maintenance upkeep.

  • Your entire closet (pack lightly for the current season, if able to)
  • Candles, wax melt warmers, scent plug-in, incense burners
  • Hot plates
  • Air fryers
  • Plug-in string lights (use battery-powered string lights instead)
  • Pets (fish are the only exception with a 5-gallon or smaller tank)
  • Wireless router (Brenau offers free internet)
  • Extension cords

Please respect these requests and remember you are living in a community where your actions affect those living around you. Disregarding this information can result in fines with the possibility of removal from the residence halls.
