Brenau University’s historic Gainesville campus was abuzz with excitement on Monday, Aug. 23, as students returned to the classroom on the first day of the new academic year. A few students shared their experiences between classes.
Enrollment will continue to fluctuate as registration continues, but Brenau is expected to welcome more than 800 new students on all campuses. A few students shared their experiences during some downtime on the Gainesville campus.
“I haven’t had my first class yet,” said Raeann Cangemi, junior health science (pre-occupational therapy) major. “I have a pretty nice schedule this year. I’m glad to be back on campus because I was remote last year.”
“I’m happy to be back and taking classes in person,” said Arisbeth Gonzalez, junior psychology major. “This year, I hope to make more friends. I plan on getting more involved on campus this year than I have in the past.”
“It has been a pretty good day so far,” said Kendyl Johnson, junior art major. “It’s not raining so I like that. On-ground classes are more fun and interactive, so I’m glad to be back.”
“Reality is setting in that this is actually happening,” said Xavier Mattlin, a freshman who is undecided on a major. “This isn’t baby stuff. This is preparing you to become an adult.”
“My first day has been good so far,” said Jasmin Mitchell, sophomore business administration major. “I’m excited to be back on campus. I missed it over the summer. I would like to join new clubs this year and plan to be active with my sorority, Tri Delta.”
“Although I’m ready to graduate and move on from this chapter, it’s really exciting to be able to soak up this last year,” said Amber Simmons, senior elementary education major. “It’s great to see the students from China back on campus. We missed them being here last year.”
