Brenau University students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends are invited to an exclusive opportunity for culture and connection at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
This special event will give attendees private access to a new exhibition, Amy Sherald: American Sublime. On Friday, Sept. 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., this limited-time exhibition will be closed to the general public and open exclusively for members of the Brenau community. Free tickets include admission to the entire museum and a lunch reception featuring Chick-fil-A.
The High is the fourth and final venue to host the national tour for Sherald’s acclaimed mid-career retrospective, which is the largest exhibition of her work to date. Featuring a broad range of paintings made from 2007 to 2024, the presentation will include many of Sherald’s most iconic works, along with rarely seen paintings spanning her career.
Born in Columbus, Georgia, Sherald graduated from Clark Atlanta University. In 2018, the High awarded her its annual David C. Driskell Prize in African American Art and Art History, the first national award to recognize the importance of African American art. The museum presented The Obama Portraits Tour, featuring her renowned portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama, in 2022.
The September event highlights Brenau’s unique relationship with the museum. Brenau’s academic affiliation with the High Museum has flourished since 2010. Through this ongoing collaboration, the university has access to hold special events and curatorial tours reserved specifically for the Brenau community, in addition to hosting annual student exhibitions at the museum.
“In terms of us being connected to the art world, this partnership is invaluable,” Claudia Wilburn, MFA, professor of art and design, said. “Our staff members collaborate with a new generation of creatives and thinkers, and the university’s students can extend their curriculum through on-site projects.”
Registration is required via Eventbrite. The exhibition is a time-ticketed event, with 50 tickets available per 30-minute slot. Parking is an additional fee. A free charter bus will leave the historic Gainesville Campus at 9:30 a.m. for students to attend the 11-11:30 a.m. time slot. Students are encouraged to carpool to attend during other time slots.
