Just one week after a significant ice storm struck North Georgia, a second winter system moved through the region on Saturday, Jan. 31, dumping dry, powdery snow across Brenau University’s Historic Gainesville Campus.
A few students braved the cold before mid-day to play in the snow, take photos and pull each other around campus on plastic sleds.
On Friday, Jan. 30, Brenau President David L. Barnett announced the closure of all university campuses throughout the weekend.
“The safety of students, faculty, staff, and the community is the university’s top priority,” Barnett said. “I urge everyone to avoid unnecessary travel and to be mindful of the dangerous cold temperatures.”
As of Saturday afternoon, temperatures continued to plummet across the area with wind gusts contributing to dangerous wind chill values. The National Weather Service Extreme Cold Warning continues through Sunday across North Georgia; Saturday night’s low in Gainesville was predicted to drop to 13 with wind chill values as low as -1.
Sunday’s forecast in Gainesville is for sun with a high near 35 and 10 to 15 mph winds, causing wind chill values as low as -1. Sunday night will be partly cloudy with a low around 20. Monday is expected to warm up slightly, with a high near 43.
