Runners, walkers hit the streets for annual Dempsey Dash

About 280 people hit the streets around Brenau University’s historic Gainesville campus for the annual Dempsey Dash on Saturday, March 14.

Participants could walk or run the 5K route or the 1K Fun Run route. Tyler Talik of Lilburn, Georgia, came in first place overall in the 5K with a time of 17:33, and Ruben de Vicente of Gainesville, Georgia, was a close second with 17:44. Full results can be found here. The 5K is a qualifying event for the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta.

The event tallied more than $19,000 in race registrations, pledges and other contributions.

The Dempsey Dash is named after the late Vice President and CFO Wayne Dempsey, who passed away after retiring from Brenau. The event raises money for the Wayne W. Dempsey Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to Brenau students in the Carole Ann Daniel College of Education or the Ivester College of Health Sciences. The scholarship was first funded in 2014 in Dempsey’s memory by an anonymous donor.
