On March 14, Brenau University will host its annual Dempsey Dash 5K and 1K Fun Run.
The event was established in 2017 in memory of Wayne Dempsey, the university’s long-time executive vice president and chief financial officer, who passed away after retiring from the university in 2014.
Proceeds from the race benefit the Wayne W. Dempsey Endowed Scholarship Fund, established to provide financial assistance for students in the Carole Ann College of Education or the Ivester College of Health Sciences.
This will be the tenth edition of Dempsey Dash, which is one of the official qualifying races for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race, held annually in July. Participants who register before Feb. 20 will receive t-shirts; all other registered runners will receive t-shirts while supplies last.
During his time at Brenau, Dempsey impacted the lives of the Brenau community through his dedication to the academic and personal growth of those he encountered.
“Dempsey served as my supervisor and mentor from 2006 to 2012, but his influence extended far beyond professional guidance,” Kelley Maddox, associate vice president of Human Resources, said. “His passing in 2014 left a void, not just in my professional world, but in my heart. I knew that his spirit of excellence and community needed to be remembered and celebrated. In 2017, the Dempsey Dash was established. The goal of the event is to channel the energy and passion he brought to his work into an event that brings people in our community together.”
The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Brenau Amphitheater. The deadline to register is 8 a.m. on March 13; late registration will have additional fees.
