Zoetic Dance: Sweet Litanies

Zoetic Dance presents Sweaty Litanies, choreographed by Christina Noel Reaves and featuring live, original music by Norman Frank. The evening will also include guest performances by Brenau dance majors as a part of Zoetic’s immersive arts platform, tête-á-tête, which brings together artists of different genres in creative art spaces throughout Georgia. This is the second and final event of this season’s tête-á-tête series, featuring excerpts of Rooms by the Brenau Department of Dance, choreographed by Zoetic Artistic Director Mallory Baxley during Zoetic’s guest residency.

Free and open to the public.





Brown Bag Series:

A Look into Black Dance and Dancing the African Diaspora

Blackbox Theatre, Pearce Auditorium

Department of Dance Chair and Assistant Professor of Dance Madia Cooper-Ashirifi will engage audience members in this free lecture-demonstration series on the intricacy and complexity of black dance. The series will cover dances of the African diaspora, choreographers, groups and the overall impact of black dance on America’s social and political construct. The series will be held every Tuesday and Thursday in February from 1-1:50 p.m. in the Blackbox Theatre next to Pearce Auditorium.

Brenau Department of Dance High School Dance Festival

Brenau historic Gainesville campus, Downtown Center and Brenau East campus

The Brenau Department of Dance will host a two-day event for high school-aged dance students to immerse themselves in a variety of dance styles and lecture classes. There will be adjudicated concerts, as well as faculty and guest lectures for teachers and dancers covering topics such as dance/movement therapy, ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop, West African dance, contact improvisation, ballroom dance and more.

Concerts are open to the public with an admission of $5.

Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre Concert

Theatre on the Square, Brenau Downtown Center

The High School Dance Festival, Feb. 9-10, 2019, will include a guest performance by Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre. Heath Gill, one of the Terminus dancers, created a dance piece entitled Confronting Genius that will be presented at the 7:30 p.m. dance concert in the Theatre in the Square.  Additionally, Brenau Dance Department will present Joshua Blake Carter’s work Genesis.  The Gainesville Ballet and other works will be performed by pre-professional companies from Atlanta.

Tickets are available at the door for $10.




Brenau Department of Dance Guest Artist/Senior Thesis Concert

This innovative and engaging concert will showcase works from senior dance majors, faculty and nationally acclaimed guests artists Joshua Blake Carter from Gus Giordano II and Mallory Baxley from Zoetic Dance Ensemble. The concert will be a showcase of creative excellence, breathtaking performances and versatility from our talented artists. $7 general admission; $5 for seniors, children under 12, Brenau alumni and college students with a valid ID. Free admission for Brenau faculty, staff and students with a valid ID.

The Brenau Art & Design Department and the Department of Dance will partner to showcase juried art students’ works and choreography by student choreographers. Dancers enrolled in Composition I will be connected to an art student to structure a concept to create a body of work to be performed. Dancers will perform in the gallery among audience members for an engaging experience.

Adaptation: Choreographer’s Showcase

Student choreographers are showcased every spring semester as a way for freshman dance majors to present their choreographic ideas as a culminated project in conjunction with their course, Composition I. The showcase works are performed by their peers, student members of Brenau University’s Department of Dance. A question-and-answer session will be held immediately after the performance for dancers to articulate more about their works to the audience.

Admission is free.




Summer Dance Intensive

Sunday, June 9 – Saturday, June 22, 2019

Brenau historic Gainesville campus

The Brenau Department of Dance’s annual Summer Dance Intensive, taught by a faculty featuring nationally and internationally recognized artists,  is a comprehensive dance program that specializes in styles such as ballet, modern, West African and jazz. The curriculum includes daily technique classes in ballet, jazz and modern, supplemented by pointe and variations, male technique, pas de deux, tap, music for dancers, pilates and yoga. There will be repertory classes for students to learn and understand the choreographic and performance process. Evening rehearsals are directed toward the culminating performance at Hosch Theater at the John S. Burd Center for Performing Arts. Open to students 14 or older, with on-campus housing provided.
