Brenau University will host its annual winter convocation at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, in Pearce Auditorium.

The winter convocation is a Brenau tradition that remembers the lessons of peace and equality taught by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Deirdre Cassell, assistant vice president of the Undergraduate School and The Women’s College, said this is a moment for the Brenau community to reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

“The annual convocation in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a meaningful tradition at Brenau University that encourages our campus community to reflect and recommit ourselves to Dr. King’s enduring call for justice, service, and ethical leadership,” Cassell said. “The event brings students, faculty, and staff together to engage thoughtfully with these values and consider how they inform our own work and learning as we pursue our shared purpose.”

Bishop Deese

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend the keynote address by Bishop Robin Dease, resident bishop of the Georgia Episcopal Area of The United Methodist Church.

Dease grew up in Brooklyn, New York, one of 13 children. She graduated from Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and earned a Master of Divinity degree and a Doctor of Ministry degree in stewardship from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

Dease was elected bishop by the 2022 Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference of The United Methodist Church and consecrated in November 2022. She began her first assignment as bishop to the North Georgia Episcopal Area of The United Methodist Church in January 2023. In September 2024, she started her next assignment as bishop of the new Georgia Episcopal Area.

Before her election to the episcopacy, Dease served as pastor and district superintendent in the South Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church and has been involved in denominational and conference boards and committees.

The event will also include performances by the Department of Dance and Portia Burns.
