Registration is now open for the Brenau Department of Humanities new creative writing camp this summer.
The day camp is open to children ages 11-15, and will take place the first week of June. Humanities Department Chair Megan Clark, Ph.D., said the camp will utilize popular tabletop role playing games to develop and improve creative writing skills.
“It’s no longer just like you have to be a big nerd to do Dungeons and Dragons,” Clark said, noting that the tabletop game gained some popularity after appearing in Netflix’s Stranger Things.
“So creating characters, role playing, figuring out cool ways to like, solving a problem, it’s all those things. We figured, as opposed to just offering a creative writing camp, this would have sort of more direction, generate some more interest, and be a little more dynamic.”
Clark, who is also a professor of English and the interim director of the Writing Center, said campers will flex their problem-solving skills, as well as have an opportunity to write as an individual and in a group.
“They’ll build the world together, so they’ll work on things like, what cities are there? What’s the lore, what’s the mythology?” Clark said. “So they’ll work on that together, making the map, too.”
Additionally, campers will use some math to determine character statistics and in gameplay, including determining attack rolls to hit an enemy, calculating damage after a successful attack, performing an ability check like acrobatics or intimidation, and also hit points lost/gained during battle.
The day camp will take place June 2-6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day in the Trustee Library. Lunch and two snacks will be provided to campers.
“Campers will get a swag bag including, a character journal, colored pencils, stickers to decorate, they get paint pens to decorate their bags, and they will get individual dice bags,” Wendy Clark, Humanities Department office manager, said.
