Brightening lives one GOLDen Gram at a time

Brenau students write encouraging letters to community members in need as a part of the Women's College GOLDen Grams initiative.

With the stroke of a brush and a few kind words, Brenau students, faculty and staff are making the season a little brighter for those in need this Thanksgiving.

The Women’s College GOLD Program recently relaunched its GOLDen Grams community-based service initiative with plans to distribute 300-500 letters to Meals on Wheels recipients during the last week of November. The Meals on Wheels program in Gainesville helps feed older adults throughout Hall County, many of which live alone.

“I know that the holidays can be so hard for so many people, especially people that are isolated,” Jamie Nunley, Women’s College dean’s assistant, said. “Hopefully it’ll bring some cheer.”

Sydney Jones, first-year psychology major, stopped by the Writing Center to craft a few GOLDen Grams. Using water colors, she painted the words, “You’re loved” on the front of a card.

“We want them to know that they’re loved, cared about, and they’re on somebody’s mind,” she said. “I definitely know how that (loneliness) feels. I definitely want to show my love and my support to them.”

The initiative previously served residents of local assisted living and nursing homes, and health care workers at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

“I think it’s a great program,” Katie Watkins, junior dance and English major, said. “I did it last year, and it’s always nice to take time out of your day to do something for somebody else. I know it makes me feel better, more calm, especially with how crazy everything is right now.”

The last round of card-making workshops will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9; Wednesday, Nov. 10; and Thursday, Nov. 11, at Sellars Gallery.
