What’s one of the biggest opportunities you’ve gained through Brenau?
I started interning with the Hall County Public Defender’s Office, and it’s been a lot of fun. Each public defender on that team has helped steer me in the right direction. I feel like I know what I want to do because of them. I’ve gone to jail and interviewed inmates. They have me doing everything. I still want to be a prosecutor, even throughout all of this. But, I feel like I’m able to hopefully assume that role in a more empathetic way to where I’m focused on people being rehabilitated.
What’s the best way to get plugged into campus life?
It took me a long time. I was homeschooled K-12, so this is the first time I’ve been in an organized academic environment. You have to learn how to push your comfort zone, bit by bit. Maybe it’s going to an event where you don’t know anybody.
Why minor in Studio Art?
I’ve always been crafting. My mom scrap-booked when I was really little, so I’ve always been around creatives. I knew that I wanted a balance. You see some really heavy things in law, especially criminal law. I wanted to be able to have something where I can work intellectually and physically with my hands.
What’s one thing you want everyone to know about Brenau?
Brenau is what you make it, and Brenau is a beautiful thing. You have the support you need, but you have to be able to find that support. That might not look like your advisor, that might not look like your department. It might be somebody else in your minor or the one-off math teacher. Brenau is a mosaic. It’s different things, and you’ve got to see what parts of that mosaic speak to you.
