Police Mental Health Collaborative Certificate

The Police Mental Health Certificate is a one-of-its-kind program designed to meet the extensive need for trained mental health professionals to work as co-responders, along with law enforcement officers. Graduates of this certificate will learn to develop and manage an effective co-responder program within a law enforcement agency that fits the unique mental health needs of the local community.

Duration: 5 or 6 semesters 
Start term: Summer or Fall 
Class type: Online with two in-person internship classes at a location of your choice

  • Learn from experienced professionals already working as co-responders to ensure that you are prepared on day one of the job. 
  • Apply the principles you’ve learned during two semester-long internship courses at the culmination of the program 
  • Gain the skills you need to help individuals enter the mental health care system, rather than jail or prison
  • Prepare to serve your community and de-escalate tense situations, creating the best outcome for all 
  • Earn this certificate as a part of the master’s degree program in Clinical Counseling Psychology or the Doctor of Clinical Psychology program at Brenau

Admission requirements

All students seeking admission to the program must: 

  • Be a licensed mental health care professional able to sign off on involuntary hospitalization or a student in a clinical or counseling program that leads to licensure capable of signing off on involuntary hospitalization 
  • Submit the following documents
    • Official college transcripts
    • Resume 
    • Two letters of recommendation
  • Ideal candidates should have a 3.0 minimum GPA

This program is pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)

Students who wish to take some courses from the Police Mental Health Collaborative Certificate, without the internships in a non-certificate granting program, may consider the Post Baccalaureate Police Mental Health Collaborative Program.
