Through this major, you will gain the knowledge and tools needed to effectively identify, assess and control risks that occur among assets, people and organizations. 

Over 2.8 million people in the U.S. work in various RMI roles, according to the Insurance Information Institute, and the demand for individuals in this field continues to grow. Risk management and insurance jobs are critically important for both individuals and businesses, so you will enter the workforce with a competitive advantage — wherever your career takes you.

Student opportunities

  • Have the option of taking our RMI introductory course — even if you’re not an RMI major — to try out the program before making a commitment 
  • Gain foundational and professional-level knowledge on the different types of insurance such as property, liability, health and life
  • Learn how to manage risks and ways to utilize insurance as a risk sharing tool
  • Hone your skills by choosing one of four pathways — finance, health care administration, human resources or marketing
  • Benefit from learning in small classes where you will have the opportunity to receive one-on-one support from faculty with industry experience
  • Take six RMI-specific courses, which includes four RMI core courses and two additional courses from your chosen pathway

RMI Core Courses

As an RMI major, you are required to take these four core courses:

  • RMI 351: Principles of Risk Management and Insurance
  • RMI 420: Insurer Operations
  • RMI 430: Commercial Property and Liability Insurance
  • RMI 451: Enterprise Risk Management

RMI Pathways

Brenau’s RMI major offers four different pathways for you to choose from, giving you the ability to align your classes with your career interests. As an RMI major, you will choose ONE of the four pathways and complete their respective two classes:

Finance

  • FI 403: Corporate Financial Policy
  • FI 406: Financial Risk Management

Healthcare Administration

  • HC 304: Economics, Budgeting, and Finance in Healthcare
  • HC 420: Law and Policy in Healthcare

Human Resources Management

  • HR 401: Benefits and Compensation
  • HR 422: HR Strategic Planning

Marketing

  • MK 412: Sales Management
  • MK 473: Marketing Management
