Save the date for the second Colossal Prints event

The Colossal Prints printmaking workshop at Brenau University on Friday, March 23, 2018.

What: The Colossal Prints event
When: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2020
Where: Golden Tiger Way

After an enormous success in its first year, the second Colossal Prints event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 13, at Brenau University.

Hosted by the Center for the Arts & Design and Kappa Pi Honors Art Fraternity, participants will carve and ink large relief prints with a road roller or steam roller. Educators and community groups are invited to join us for this one-of-a-kind educational opportunity.

This event has expanded and will take place on Golden Tiger Way, right in front of Pearce Auditorium on the historic Gainesville campus.

In conjunction with the event, the Kappa Pi Honors Art Fraternity is hosting a carnival on the Front Lawn featuring games, music, booths from various Brenau departments and student organizations, and merchandise that support philanthropic organizations.

Registration and Materials

We will be providing limited rolls of battleship grey linoleum, and priority will be given to those who sign up first. Please contact Professor Claudia Wilburn at cwilburn@brenau.edu to sign up to participate with your organization or classroom no later than Feb. 7.

The theme for participating groups is mythology. The linoleum can be cut into smaller pieces and should be carved ahead of time. The day of the event, each group will print those pieces together to create a quilt-like final print on muslin.

When you send the email to register, let Wilburn know when you plan to arrive and leave.  Classrooms will be scheduled for printing earlier in the day and community organizations will be scheduled for later in the day. All participants will be asked to help out while others are printing, but there will be down time to enjoy other activities.

Individual artists from the area are welcome to participate by bringing their own carved woodblocks or linoleum blocks to be printed during the day. We can provide muslin and ink for your print, but we ask you to volunteer for an hour during the event in exchange. You will need to also register by Feb. 7, so that we can order supplies and get you in the schedule for printing and volunteering.

Volunteering and Carnival Logistics

Proactive volunteers are needed throughout the day. If you are interested in helping but do not plan on carving a block, please email Wilburn.

In particular, we are excited to have a booth for the Empty Bowl Project supporting the Georgia Mountain Food Bank at the carnival. For a $10 donation, participants can paint a bowl for the annual fundraiser. Come watch the spectacle of printmaking on a colossal scale and support local charities at the same time!

Booths and tables are available for students, vendors and organizations. The cost of reservations is $30 for vendors outside of Brenau and $10 for Brenau departments and organizations. This fee goes to support the Kappa Pi student organization. Contact Kendy Manzano at kmanzano@tiger.brenau.edu by Feb. 15 to reserve a booth or table.

In the case of rain, the event will take place Friday, March 27.
