Building the Community You Want to Live In

Civic engagement and building the community you want to live in are major themes of Dr. Hollimon’s Intro to Gender Studies (GS200W) course. Intro to Gender Studies is a course which meets the civic engagement requirement of the curriculum so there are numerous course assignments and activities focused on their outreach and involvement to build the type of community in which they want to live.

Each week, a group will write and distribute a weekly newsletter focused on gender equity. For Labor Day, they focused on women’s employment; after Justice Ginsberg’s death they did one on her legacy; and last week, they had one about women’s firsts in the national government.

In October, the students wrote empowerment, self-esteem building community messages around campus for National Love Your Body week. In response to this year’s major election, the students want to highlight again their sense of community and support for one another in chalk around campus and in their communities.
