Kelly Spain Appointed New Augusta Campus Director
MARTINEZ, Georgia, July 29, 2016 – Kelly Spain, who since 2012 has been academic advising coordinator and office manager for the Brenau University Department of Mathematics & Science in Gainesville, Georgia, began a new position July 25 as director of the Brenau campus that serves the Augusta metropolitan area in Georgia and South Carolina.
The university, which has operated in the area since it opened classes on the U.S. Army post at Fort Gordon in 1980, now offers undergraduate programs in business and education and graduate programs in business at its facilities in Martinez. Augusta students also have access to the full range of Brenau online undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including those in applied gerontology, nursing and business specialties. Over the last 35 years, more than 2,200 students have earned Brenau degrees at the Augusta campus.
Spain replaces long-time director Donnie Moore, who in 2015 relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, to open the Brenau campus in that city before he retired this year.
Spain said one of her biggest goals as the new campus director is building local partnerships – particularly, those that help meet the needs of the university’s military veteran students.
“I’m really looking forward to getting the Brenau name out in the community,” Spain said. “I have lots of ideas and my wheels are turning. I am really excited about all of the opportunities we have here in Augusta. The transition has been very easy. A lot of the things I learned as the advising coordinator, I have been able to transfer into this new role.”
Spain is from Columbia, South Carolina, and has spent the last 20 years residing in Gainesville. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Paine College in 1998 and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Clark Atlanta University in 2000. Prior to her work at Brenau, Spain was an adolescent therapist, a case manager for Hall County, Georgia, Division of Family and Children Services and the executive branch director of Georgia Mountains YMCA.
“Kelly embodies a natural knack to motivate others to reach their fullest potential personally and professionally,” said Associate Provost Crystal Toombs. “She will not only exceed the expectations of this position, but also she will contribute extensively to the continued growth and success of the Augusta campus and the mission of Brenau University.”
