Currently ranked fifth in the nation, the Brenau University Golden Tigers tennis team won the fifth seed position for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship tournament May 17-21 in Mobile, Alabama.

The Tigers received a first-round bye and will open play on Wednesday, May 18, against the Tuesday winner of the match between No. 12 Davenport University and No. 21 Reinhardt University.

Brenau wrapped up the regular season ranked No. 2 in the Southern States Athletic Conference with a 10-2 conference record and a 16-6 record overall.

The seven-player Golden Tigers team is loaded with talent – including the 2016 SSAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year Fatyha Berjane, a senior from Casablanca, Morocco. Other standouts include All-Conference freshman Rebecca Pijils of Beek, Netherlands, sophomore Maya Mammetgulyyeva of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, and sophomore Patricia Recalde Pacua of Asuncion, Paraguay.

“There are no weak teams in the tournament, so we expect a difficult match no matter who we face,” said Brenau Tennis Coach Andre Ferreira. “I know our team is capable of competing against anyone, and we have enough talent to take points in every position. As long as we play to the best of our abilities, I like our chances moving forward.”
