The new Brenau University lacrosse team will open its inaugural season on Friday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. at Bobby Gruhn Field at City Park, 898 Longstreet Circle in Gainesville.

There are 37 teams playing women’s lacrosse in the 2017-2018 school year in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), of which Brenau is a member. Lacrosse has been the fastest-growing school sport for nearly two decades, according to Brenau Athletic Director Mike Lochstampfor.

“It’s such a popular sport right now with the momentum it’s gained at the youth level and in high schools,” Lochstampfor said. “Even internally, we had requests from current students to add the sport.”

The Golden Tigers will face the Georgetown (Kentucky) College Tigers in the team’s first game Friday, and Brenau friends, family and members of the community are encouraged to come show their support. The first 100 in attendance will receive a free Chick-fil-A meal and official team poster, and the Chick-fil-A cow will be throwing out gifts and coupons during half time.
