Hispanic Heritage Month is a national celebration that honors the cultures, traditions and contributions of Hispanic and Latin Americans to the United States. The monthlong celebration takes place from Sept. 15-Oct. 15 every year, a period of time deliberately chosen due to its strong connection to the history of Hispanic culture.

The Hispanic/Latino population in the U.S. is approximately 57 million people, or one in six Americans. Many questions abound regarding Hispanic/Latino identity. For example, do you know the difference between the terms Hispanic, Latino/Latina, Latinx? Hispanic refers to people of Spanish-speaking origin. In other words, “Hispanic” is tied to the language. Latino/a refers to the people of Latin America, which is used to describe the countries that were at one point under Spanish, French and Portuguese rule in Central and South America. So, Latino/a is tied to a geographical region. Latinx is the gender-neutral or non-binary term for Latino/Latina and pushes back on the gendered language to be more inclusive. As a way to exemplify the complexity and richness of this group, not all Hispanics are Latino/a (Spaniards are Hispanic, too), and not all Latinos/Latinas are Hispanic (Brazilians speak Portuguese, Belizians speak English, Surinamese speak Dutch, etc).

The contributions of Hispanic and Latin Americans are embedded within the genetic makeup of the U.S., one that goes beyond the rhythmic appeal of Salsa and the deliciousness of tacos. Hispanic Heritage Month is not just about celebrating culture. It is also about the individual achievements of those Hispanic and Latin Americans whose work has paved the way for future generations of Hispanic and non-Hispanic Americans alike.

We hope that you will take time this year during Hispanic Heritage Month to enjoy, celebrate and appreciate the traditions and efforts of Hispanic and Latin Americans who have worked hard to enrich the multicultural identity of the U.S., including right here at Brenau.
