Reception and Dance Performance: Thursday, March 6th, 2014, 5:30-7:00 p.m.

This exhibition celebrates the rich history of innovation and collaboration of the legendary Black Mountain College. Founded in 1933, Black Mountain College was based on the principle that a fine arts education was central to any liberal arts education. This
interdisciplinary approach was radical at the time and attracted a faculty of the day’s leading artists, composers, poets and designers including Josef and Anni Albers, John Cage, Willem de Kooning, and Merce Cunningham. It was here that Merce Cunningham formed his dance company that would go on to collaborate with artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol, and here that John Cage would perform his first “happening”. In its 24 short years, Black Mountain College created an environment of experimentation and collaboration that revolutionized the art world in the 20thcentury. Free and open to the public.
