Programs in the Humanities

ENGLISH

English is the major that not only prepares you to make a living but also, more importantly, to make a life. Do you like to read, think about, and discuss good literature? Do you like to learn about other people and cultures? Are you a creative writer or interested in a career as an editor or technical writer? English prepares you with a strong educational foundation so that you can have multiple options at different times in your career. Studies show that most people will change careers several times in the course of their life. English is the major that prepares you to listen, think, speak, and write – skills that employers, law schools, and grad schools all value greatly – and skills that prepare you to make those careers moves most easily.

PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGION

Courses in philosophy and religion involve students in relative consideration of the nature of humanity, society, morality, arts, religion, and the natural world. These courses contribute to the liberal arts education in two basic ways: they help students understand and evaluate beliefs that are integral to their views of human existence, and they are meant to enable students to acquire philosophical skills and materials which enrich and integrate the study of other disciplines. Essential to the success of each course is an atmosphere of openness to diverse viewpoints and a respect for the high standards of critical thinking.
