The specialist level teacher serves as an
instructional leader and is expected to be particularly knowledgeable about
current theory and practice. The program builds upon the teacher's prior
professional preparation and experiences to achieve this. The degree consists of 30 semester hours,
with the coursework divided between professional core and content. The
concentrations for middle grades are offered in combinations of language
arts/social studies and math/science.
In addition students are required to implement a
school improvement plan. This is an advanced study of individually selected
topics, allowing experienced teachers the opportunity to develop and implement
innovative and effective teaching practices in their own instructional setting.
The degree is offered on a rotating basis between
the Gainesville and Atlanta campus
locations in a combination of summer and weekend classes, with the format tailored to
accommodate the schedules of practicing professionals. Participants move through
the course sequence as part of a group of 30 students or less in each major. In
the process, they develop a collaborative spirit of shared effort and learning.
