For the third time in its three-year history, Brenau University’s Golden Tigers intercollegiate cheerleading team finished near the top of U.S. rankings when it came away from the National Cheerleaders Association college nationals tournament ranked No. 3 in the nation.
The squad from the Gainesville, Ga., university racked up a score of finished 85.05 at the tournament finals on Friday, April 11, behind No. 1 Davenport University from Grand Rapids, Mich., with 91.9 points, and St. Gregory’s University of Shawnee, Okla., at No. 2 with 88.63.
After the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics recognized competitive cheerleading as an intercollegiate sport, Brenau was one of the early adopters when it started its team in 2011. In 2012 the all-female team came away from the nationals in Daytona Beach ranked No. 2 in the nation in its class. Last year, the Golden tigers finished 4th in the nation.
Despite its success, the Brenau team is still relatively young. Of the 24 members on the roster, only four are seniors and four are juniors.
Earlier this week Brenau Coach Krista Britt announced the first 2014 signee to fill one of the four vacant spots that will occur after May graduation: Alyssa Biggs of Commerce, Ga., a member of Commerce High School’s Georgia state championship team.
