Brenau Places Third in International Mediation Tournament
Brenau University placed third out of 42 teams in mediation at the 14th Annual International Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament held Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at Drake Law School in Des Moines, Iowa. The team comprised Melanie Fain, a senior conflict resolution and legal studies major from Cleveland, Ga., Ashley Lee, a senior English major from Columbus, Ga., and Suzette Meza, a junior conflict resolution and legal studies major from El Paso, Texas.
Brenau’s team competed in the three preliminary rounds, advanced to the semi-final round in both mediation and advocacy and then to the “Final Four” in mediation. Brenau placed third at the tournament, which featured teams from the United States, Canada and India. In addition, each individual team member received a plaque designating her as an All-American, meaning that their individual efforts in the preliminary rounds placed them in the top 15 individual mediators and advocate/client pairs in the tournament.
Their presence in the top four mediation teams also earned each individual a medallion and the team an invitation to an international mediation tournament in Bhopal, India, in February 2014. Professor Kenneth Frank of Brenau, who coaches the mediation team, stated that he was very proud of the effort by the Brenau team as it competed and beat teams from larger institutions such as Boston University.
