Hot shooting and clutch free throws propelled the Brenau Golden Tigers basketball team past Auburn-Montgomery University 67-61 in an SSAC conference matchup on Saturday.
In the first half, the Golden Tigers took an early 11-4 lead with three pointers from Kalin Williams of Palmetto, Ga., andBrittney Wiley of Royston, Ga. However, the Warhawks defense allowed them to go on an 11-0 run to take back the lead. Cold shooting kept Brenau at arm’s length and AUM took a 28-23 lead into intermission.
After the break, the Golden Tigers found their rhythm as Wiley nailed a deep three pointer and freshman post Nekeia Brown of Danielsville, Ga., finished an offensive put back to give the Golden Tigers the lead. The game stayed close until late, when back to back baskets by Kalin Williams and Jasmine Butler propelled Brenau past AUM going into the last three minutes. Williams then sealed the game, shooting 5-6 from the foul line in the last minute, to give the Golden Tigers their tenth win of the season.
“We really struggled to finish shots in the first half,” said head coach Kris Stewart. “In the second half, we had some of the same looks, but really shot the ball well. This team plays so hard and I am really proud of their effort against a very solid AUM team”.
Williams and Butler both combined for 21 points to lead the Golden Tigers. Wiley chipped in 13 points, while Brown added 4 points and 9 rebounds.
Tina Odume and Katie Williams led AUM with 15 points each.
