Brenau BBQ Championship Competition

Brenau’s annual fundraising event for scholarships and catalyst for the community activity on the Gainesville will get bigger and better with its fifth outing on Memorial Day weekend in May 2013. Starting as a Memphis Barbecue Network competition, the Brenau 2013 event will also be opened for competitors in the Georgia Barbecue Association. As one local columnist expressed it, the Brenau Barbecue Championship has now become the official kick-off of summer activities in the Gainesville/Hall County/Lake Lanier area. And, with the addition of a wider variety of teams and competitions, it will only get better.
The MBN competition grew out of the famous Memphis in May event – the Superbowl of all things barbecue. Professional cook teams from throughout the Southeast converge on the Brenau University Gainesville campus to compete in three different divisions: Whole Hog, Shoulder Shank and Ribs.
Local “Backyard Braggarts” also get in the spirit by competing in Ribs and Boston Butt with the same folks who judge the pros looking over their, ahem, shoulders. And ribs.
