The Tigers finished the regular season with a 15-9 record (6-1 SSAC) and secured the number 8 seed spot in the NAIA National Championships in Mobile, Alabama. Brenau won the Championship in 1999 and 2002 and over the past 15 years has consistently competed for national honors. The team is comprised of students from all over the globe. The number 1 player Paula Ghilardotti hails from Cordoba, Argentina while the number 2 player Jolene Wong is a 17 year old freshman from Singapore. Sophomore Natalia Aranguren from Bogota, Colombia plays number 3 and the only senior, team MVP, number 4 player Lindsay Woon is from Malaysia and will graduate the day before the tournament begins! Diana Cardenas, a junior from Bogota, Colombia and Brigid Hook a freshman from Zimbabwe complete the team in the 5 and 6 spots. With only one senior on the team, Lindsay Woon, Coach Leslie is very pleased with their performance this year commenting that, ‘Despite fielding a team with only 2 returning players, Woon and Aranguren, we have managed to improve our national ranking to number 8 from 15 last year and have once again made it to the National Championships. Our doubles play has been excellent all year, we have worked hard on overall fitness and agility training and it has paid off. Our team has also excelled in the classroom with an overall a 3.5 grade point average, which shows how well these girls have managed to balance their school work with the rigors of college tennis. The Tigers received a bye into the second round of the tournament where they faced the Savannah School of Art and Design, a team that they had beaten recently in the Blue/Gray tournament. As predicted by Coach Leslie the doubles round proved to be critical. The Tigers came out flat and dropped all three doubles to go down 3-0. This deficit proved too much to overcome. Brigid Hook went down at the number 6 spot and Paula Ghilardotti lost at the number 1 position to give SCAD the victory. Lindsay Woon completed her match to give Brenau its only win. The remaining matches were stopped in progress with Jolene Wong and Diana Cardenas leading and Natalia Aranguren, at number 3, down a set. Coach Leslie felt that the two day wait to play the first match and the relative inexperience of the team at this level were contributing factors in the loss. He is, however proud of this young team’s accomplishments and is looking forward to the challenges of the 08 season. He is actively recruiting 2 or 3 players to strengthen the team and hopefully make another appearance at the National Championships. It is anticipated that the SSAC conference will remain as strong as ever next season, with five teams ranked in the top 15 in the country, including the National Champions Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM)
