International Field Station Courses: YUCATAN, MEXICO
These courses are designed to introduce students to field investigations and observations in a unique international context. The faculty at Brenau has no doubt that this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the student! The Yucatan peninsula presents abundant opportunities for the study of neo-tropical ecosystems, including the coral reef. A virtual immersion in the ancient culture and archaeology of the Maya people will form a rich background from which to study biology. The opportunity to live and work closely with a small group of fellow students in a foreign environment will also be enriching. Electronic communication and technology will literally be left behind while we spend time in an outdoor classroom, far from modern civilization… Safety is our # 1 priority. Faculty and professional guides will be with the students for the duration of the course. At no time will any student be allowed to leave the immediate area of the hotel or field station without an accompanying student or faculty member. In all locations including the Kiuic field station, a plan for transport to nearby hospitals in case of emergency is in place (satellite telephones and vehicle transport are readily accessible, large city hospitals are a maximum of approximately 2 hours away by vehicle from all locations). March and May are not part of hurricane season in the Yucatan, but a plan is in place to re-locate in case of inclement weather. Students may choose from two offerings, or they may take both (BY 251 will be offered as a conventional Jan – April course with a mandatory field trip over March Break; BY 151 will be self-contained as a 3 week trip offered in May). These are “real” courses and one or more may be used to fulfill degree requirements.
The cost of the travel and accommodation will be partially subsidized by the student tuition fees. Approximately 75% of the tuition will be applied towards the cost of accommodation and other travel costs. The tuition fees will be approximately $450.00 per credit hour. (Similar to our usual fees). What will be the dates? The By 251 course is planning on a departure of Saturday, March 3rd, and a return Sunday evening, March 11th. A once weekly lecture will be held on Wednesday mornings throughout the semester. When will payment be due? Students should be prepared to pay tuition as usual for BY 251; plus a non-refundable $500.00 deposit which is due in the first week of January. Other fees including the balance of ground costs (if any) will be due BEFORE departure in March. What documents will be required? Each individual is responsible for ensuring that she or he has the appropriate documents to enter Mexico. A current passport will be required. Apply immediately as waiting times have increased! Proof of traveler’s health insurance will also be required. |
