Coach Susan McIntyre has been coaching at Brenau University since July 2006. She came to Brenau with a background of coaching cross country at the high school level.
In 2000, Susan began coaching the North Forsyth High School cross country team, where her children attended school. “There were many triumphant moments during my five years at North Forsyth. Individually, our runners set many new personal records. One of our girls earned the Iron Woman Award at the Naval Academy during her summer session. Our lead female runner won State her sophomore year, and for three years in a row we had two girls finish in the top ten at State. As a team, in 2003 our girls were runners-up at State. Two other times they finished in the top five and top ten. The competition for the boys’ team was very tough in 4AAAA, and we were very proud to make it to State twice.”
The Brenau Cross Country Team has continually improved since Susan McIntyre became its coach. In 2007, Brenau moved up to sixth out of eleven teams in the Region XIII Conference. One of our athletes, Rachel Nodine, was named an NAIA Scholar Athlete, along with being nominated for the SSAC All-Academic Award.
Susan’s approach to coaching is for each athlete to be the best they can be and to learn how their body ticks. “Every runner is individual, and I am committed to helping each runner achieve their goals.”
Susan’s personal accomplishments as an endurance athlete included winning the 24 Hours of Adrenaline Mountain Bike Race in Conyers as a solo rider, winning the Don Hartke 3-Stage Road bike race, completing the Country Music Marathon in Nashville and the New York City Marathon. For many years Susan, her children and her running partners ran the Peachtree Road Race on the 4th of July and the Atlanta Half Marathon on Thanksgiving Day.
Susan has been married to Doug McIntyre for twenty-eight years. They have three children: Ryan graduated from Northwood University in 2007; Zack is a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; and Corey attends North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Georgia.
