The Coach:  Helena McGuire

With 20 years of rowing and coaching experience, Helena is excited by the challenge of coaching the women’s rowing program at Brenau University. She came to Gainesville in the fall of 2002 and immediately resumed her own training for competitive rowing.

She started rowing in the mid-eighties with Cascadilla Boat Club (CBC), Ithaca, NY. Long before that, as a teen in her native Czechoslovakia, she competed in track and field, and played soccer (her dad was a professional soccer coach and referee). Rowing quickly became her passion; within a few years she had won the Masters Women’s Lightweight Double at the Head of the Charles and medaled at the USRowing Masters Nationals. During the early ‘90’s she coached several state champion high school rowing teams from Ithaca. She also coached masters at CBC and helped as an assistant at Cornell University.
After raising two daughters she earned a degree in nursing, and for five years worked with students at Ithaca College. During this time she gained insight into the many challenges facing todays student-athletes.

Lake Lanier and Gainesville provide Brenau students with a great opportunity to row at one of the best locations in North America. Helena is excited by the opportunity to work with this group and looks forward to another successful season.
