BULLI SUMMER SCHEDULE 2003

REGISTRATION SET FOR THURSDAY, MAY 8

 Registration for the Summer Term of the Brenau University Learning and Leisure Institute is scheduled for Thursday, May 8 at 4:00 p.m. The meeting, to be held at Brenau’s Thurmond McRae Auditorium, will include the enrollment of new members and registration for summer courses.  There will also be mail-in course registration for Summer Term. Those unable to attend may also register at the BULLI office in the Jacobs Building by Tuesday, May 13 in order to be considered within normal registration dates.  Those registering after that date will only be able to register for those classes not closed out.

Special Offer for Summer 2003!

For the 2002-2003 academic year, membership for BULLI has been $110.00; however, for Summer term ONLY, membership will be $50.00.  If you know anyone who has been interested in the BULLI program, but hasn’t become a member yet, this is the perfect time for them to “get their feet wet” and discover the joys of lifelong learning.

You may take as many classes as you wish at an additional fee of $20.00 per class. Membership entitles you to attend all BULLI classes and social functions (trips, hiking, etc.) as well as allowing you to use the Brenau library, and the cafeteria where BULLI members are given a reduced meal rate. You may also join the Brenau Fitness Center at the prorated student rate for the remainder of the academic year.

Please take this opportunity to tell friends and neighbors about this terrific program, and give them the gift of lifelong learning. BULLI is offering some outstanding courses for summer and our hope is that those courses will attract new members.  You may pick up extra copies of the BULLETIN at the BULLI office to give to folks whom you know that may be interested. Remember, there is no age limit for BULLI members.  Anyone who is able to attend daytime classes is welcome to join.

SUMMER TERM COURSES – JUNE 9 THROUGH JULY 18, 2003

 AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT – What would you do if you could move with greater ease?  Do you long for the grace and freedom of movement you experienced as a child?  You can still access those motions.  The Feldenkrais Method ® reminds your nervous system about more efficient movement patters through gentle, verbally guided movements.  Monday, 9:00-10:30 a.m., Nancy Harden holds a Masters degree in physical therapy and is a licensed physical therapist and certified Feldenkrais practitioner.

BEACH READING AND THE SANDS OF TIME – Ready for your summer read? This course will feature some light reading with interesting messages. We will examine what can be learned from historical novels and how fiction can marry truth.  Emphasis on American history and novels. Reading list to be handed out at registration or will be mailed to those registered. Monday, 10:45 a.m.–12:15 p.m., Susan Reynolds is a retired librarian and has taught previously for BULLI.

THEATER APPRECIATION 101 – Theater is fun, exciting and for everyone! Topics include the history of theater, the major plays, players and movements; Speaking Theater – the terms, slang and lingo; how did they do that – basic stagecraft explained, and then get on your feet, if you wish, and give it a try! Optional field trip to see and discuss a play.  Monday, 1:00-2:30p.m., Angela Tonn has taught and directed for over 14 years both with the Dekalb County School System and for theaters such as the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Alfred Uhry Theater

BEGINNING COMPUTER -This course, designed for beginners with little or no computer experience will cover the basics, such as understanding how computers work, using the mouse and opening and closing programs in the Windows2000 program. We will also work with Microsoft Office XP Word as a word processing program. Monday, 2:45-4:15p.m., Kathy Amos is the coordinator of BULLI and has taught computer for Several years.

ENGLISH COUNTRY FOLK DANCING - Ready to kick up your heels? Come join us and have some fun! This course, open to couples or singles, will open a new world of dancing for you. The basic steps and a brief history of this centuries old traditional dance form will be taught, as well as many actual dances as time permits.  Tuesday, 10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., Ruth Purcell has over 15 years experience in teaching folk dance.  She also plays fiddle for contra, English country and Scottish country dancing.

REALMS AND ROYALTY OF CLASSICAL AFRICA – What you might not have learned in your world history classes! Kings, queens and other royalty; gold, ivory, jewels and other precious commodities; all manner of amazing facts! In addition to classical African kingdoms to the 500 BCE to 1500 CE era such as Songhay and Great Zimbabwe, we will meet geniuses, meet the real “Lion King”, the real Midas and look at the coming of Islam. Tuesday, 1:00-2:30 p.m., Wayne McDaniel holds a Masters degree in Asian Studies, is a former writer for the Times, and is an author and free-lance writer.

GEORGIA BYWAYS AND BACKROADS – Join us for a leisurely exploration of some of the delights of a Georgia summer.  Learn about some of our state’s treasures, best kept secrets and places you thought you knew.  We’ll cover more than a dozen destinations including Georgia’s fabulous coast, canyons, and waterfalls, learn about the Falcons training camp; follow the Civil War Heritage trail and much more.  Outstanding presenters and possible field trips!  Wednesday, 10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., Facilitators are BULLI members Elaine Dittmer, Bob Johnson, Wayne McDaniel and John Rogers.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ETHICS – What are right actions? What is the highest good in life?  In this course we will explore how major philosophers from the classical period through the twentieth century have answered these two central questions of ethics.  Wednesday, 1:00-2:30 p.m., Dr Andrea Birch is professor of philosophy and Dean of the School of Fine Arts and Humanities at Brenau

INTERMEDIATE COMPUTER – This course is a continuation of the Beginning Computer course and will continue working with Microsoft OfficeXP Word as well as cover Internet email.  Students should have taken the Beginning Computer course or have had some computer experience. DECORATIVE PAINTING: FOLKART – Step into the world of decorative painting.  Learn the basics on wood and fabric prep and finishing, strokework and decorative painting techniques, as you complete your own special projects. Thursday, 10:45a.m. – 12:15 p.m.; Kathy Ash has taught many BULLI art classes – watercolor, acrylics, pastels and calligraphy
